State of the Game Update

Our original plan as laid out in the State of the Game was to let the game play out to its anniversary in July. Unfortunately, due to various circumstances among members of our mod team, we no longer feel confident we'd be able to dedicate an adequate amount of time and effort towards the game within this four month time-frame. We've also considered the feedback we've received, which highlighted several key flaws in the game's design and how we've communicated information thus far. Addressing these issues is both necessary for the game's success and an increase to the mod workload during this projected time-frame. Creating imprints, events, and reacting to character input on the setting all require a great deal of effort and creativity on our part, and unfortunately these aspects of the game have not decreased with our loss of players. We anticipated that the coming months would require more work on our end, but changes in our own availability as mods have made our original plan unfeasible without cutting significant corners.
Rather than drag things out when the game is already struggling, we've concluded that the best decision for the game is to wrap things up now and give everyone a chance to have closure with their CR. We will be working on an ending log to go up later this month, as soon as we are able to. We will also be opening the main RP community to allow comments from all journals, so anyone will be welcome to bring in a dropped or brand new characters to participate if they wish to do so. The meme community has already been switched to open membership and may be used freely by anyone as a TR-themed sandbox.
While the game will be “ending,” we will still be considering a potential reopening/reboot of Tabula Rasa once we have the time to rework its flaws and properly run it again. There was a comment on the feedback post that suggested a reboot would work better than a hiatus - a reboot is actually closer to what we had in mind, so that was poor wording on our part! With that said, we also don't want to make any promises since we've already had to make the difficult decision to close ahead of schedule. If there are any future developments with a TR reboot, we will share them on our mod plurk (
When creating TR, we had a lot of wild ideas that we hadn't seen any other games try before. Some of our ideas worked, and some of them didn't - a lot of things we'd do differently if we'd known better from the start. But we are proud of what we've achieved here, what we've learned, and the wonderful people we've met along the way. We tried something different, and maybe it only lasted 9 months, but we don't think those 9 months are without value. Not everything has to last forever, and we had fun with the game while we were here. We hope that others who have played here have felt the same, no matter how long or short your time with us was.
Above all, we want to thank everyone one last time for going on this journey with us and creating this game - because Tabula Rasa was never a game made by just one person, three people, or any number of mods. Tabula Rasa is a game that has been touched by every player that's crossed its thresholds, and it never could have been Tabula Rasa if this weren't the case. Thank you for giving TR a chance, for being wonderful players, and for all of your fantastic ideas and contributions along the way.
