In general, the connection to the item can be loose if it's something that doesn't give any additional powers or advantages - an uncle's friend's cousin's necklace isn't a big deal for a character to have, so if you wanted to make a case for an item like that we'd likely allow it. Things like magical items, living creatures, and important items that hold a strong association with an existing character are less likely to be approved.
